Garibaldi fought as a volunteer for the independence of the southernmost part of Brazil, the Rio Grande do Sul republic. If they had won I expect their GDP and HDI would be more like that of Uruguay, another country for whose independence Garibaldi fought.

In Brazil, people self-identify in different ways, depending on the convenience of the desired narrative, usually from the left. In crime statistics, the press refers to them as "black," the same occurs with the prison population. When they are in university, the press says that all mixed-race people are white to advocate for more affirmative action. Conveniently, when trying to enter university, people often self-identify as "pardo", which is seen more like black culturally speaking.
